V.S.Achuthananthan and his remarks

by tushizap | December 8, 2008 at 04:16 am

A crap load of things happened in India in a very short time. The markets collapsed, lakhs lost their job and lively-hood, then the macabre attack on Mumbai and the ensuing madness and in this quagmire let us not forget that some states are heading towards elections and in some places it has already happened. People have let loose their words everywhere. Be it on the Television, Radio, Print media or blogs, people have been expressing their views. It is not just in India, our neighbor who is finger pointed at, is also engaged in this orgy of words.

Nationalism and anger has reached its apogee, people are literally hurling abuses at everyone and everything and our media is acting more or less like a pimp at this juncture. Achuthananthan unfortunately got dragged in to this quagmire of words, when he tried visiting Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s house and was shooed away by his father. Let us not forget, it is at a time when we have found the lost love for our jawans and commandos. Indeed, jawans and commandos did a terrific job but jumping the guns and reaching conclusions are absurd.

There are some blogs which are trying to decipher all this and is trying to strike a balance and i think that is what we need right now. One among them is here. This man, who is a Malayalee who knows his language well enough is trying to explain to us that the CM did not humiliate Major or his family but it was a plain rhetoric, when questioned by the media about the incident.

Let me make it very clear to everyone who knows Malayalam and who does not : CM has not called the Major a dog, neither did he call his family a pack of dogs nor his house a kennel. What he simply meant was that, “if it was not Major Sandeep’s house, no dog would have gone there”. Now, he could have done without the “dog” part and would have sounded much better.

So this is easy fodder for the neo-rich mallus or mals, as they would like them to be addressed. They have grabbed on his apparent illiteracy and his incapability of speaking English. All i can say them is cut the crap and get lost. This man here is more than 80,waiting in front of a martyrs house and his inebriated (Expected, as he lost his son) father makes a scene saying that no “dog” will be allowed in to his house. CM did not make a scene there nor did he engage in any war of words there. And one more thing, as it is Achuthananthan, the Major’s family can be sure that they will no tbe taunted further after this public display of derision against the leader. I can imagine what would have been the repercussions, if Major’s father had done this to Lalu Prasad Yadav or for that matter Kumara Swami.

So for all the hacks and there cronies who are trying to stir-shit, please get lost and i will wrap up this barrage of words by pasting the comment i posted on this blog, which is trying to make some sense out of this issue.

A barrage of rhetoric here again. Leaders essentially need not speak English. He spoke English because he was questioned by the English media who were present there. Otherwise VS would have replied in lucid Malayalam to any of the questions posed at him. I think he is more proud than any of these whimpering neo-rich mallus who are trying to gauge his education and his prowess in English. Get lost, is all i can say.

Now, the wordings of what he told is a bit controversial but no where has he insulted the dead Major. As an elected representative who is the CM of kerala he had to visit Major’s house and so he did. There an inebriated father of the Major was showering abuses on CM ,the home minister and created an unwarranted scene.

Let me tell you, this scene has got lot to do with the slimy journalism many of our mainstream media is carrying out. This time around the rich and the affluent are seriously scared after “their” icons Taj and Oberoi were attacked. They flocked on to the TV screens and wheezed and in one stretch of their breath berated all the politicians and media has been able to propel this feeling a bit too far time around and it was by cashing in on the anger the people felt after the macabre attack in Mumbai. For the rich; politicians are dancing buffoons, today they will lash them.. tomorrow they will be in their laps.

Now some senseless, ignorant and stupid people do get brainwashed by these acts and they are unnecessarily blowing up an issue while the news channels are making hay while the sun shines. They are badly trying to push their TRP rating by cashing in the anger of the people and the fuming nationalism. Somehow we seems to have found a long lost love for all our jawans and Majors.

How many of us were in public supporting the Jawans when they asked for a pay rise? Did we have to wait till a Mumbai Massacre and an Achuthananthan for recognizing and awarding them? Didnt we have to support and pay them well, earlier?

These people who are now creating a ruckus over this issue are those who should not be taken in to account as you people seem to be bothered about all this when situation arises. Where were you all before? Afterall there are umpteen number of unjust things happening in our society… where are you people? If some silly media needs to instigate and invoke your true spirit, your spirit will die soon too.

A footnote for all the loony “he doesnt know english” people :

This is a comment in i left on this blog about the irrelevance of english to be a public figure.

Leaders essentially need not be wearing Armani suites and D&G glasses and speak freaking fluent English. He was forced to speak in English as the English media asked him contorted questions in English. Otherwise he is a proud enough malayalee who would have spoken in very lucid mother tounge of his - Malayalam. The neo-rich middle class pricks are whimpering a bit too much about English and what not. Utterly crap and disgusting. If you have any sense of history and has heard about someone called AKG , ( A wikipedia link here is indespensible as none of you pricks will have any idea, who this man is!) let me remind you that he never used to speak English fluently. if your grandparents are still alive, you better ask them, what kind of attention and respect does that man used to garner in parliament and public circles with his broken English and that too when suave people like Nehru was around.

V. S. Achuthananthan - a fighter to the core

In the late 1920s early 1930s, at a time when Kerala was bound in the chains of a rigid caste
system, a boy going to primary school at Kalarkode near here, was one day ridiculed and beaten up by some upper caste boys.

The next day, on the advice of his father, the little boy carried a stick with him, and on being waylaid by his tormentors once again, let loose a flurry of quick blows at them. Pretty soon, all of them fled, leaving the boy with perhaps his first lesson in resisting oppression and injustice.

Decades later, that young boy is due to be sworn in as the 20th Chief Minister of Kerala at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow. But, the years have not dimmed his fighting spirit and 82-year-old Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan continues to be as fiesty a fighter today as he was while lashing out at his boyhood bullies.

''''My brother has always fought against social injustice, including corruption and mafia rule. He suffered several sorrows in his political career for this. He was brutally manhandled by police.

He still carries a scar from the time the police speared the bayonet of a gun into his foot,'''' recalls Ayikkutty, the only sister of Achuthanandan, who was a witness to his early political life.

Living close to Achuthanandan’s residence at Punnapra, near here, Ayikkutty is happy that her ''annan'' (elder brother) has finally been rewarded for his life of sacrifice and struggle.

Remarks another comrade-in-arms K R Swaminathan, who was with ''VS'' at the time of the famous Punnapra Vayalar Communist struggle against the Diwan''s rule and the formation of the Communist movement in Central Travancore: ''''He is an uncompromising comrade in the cause of ideology. He is always a fighter. He wished to be known as a fighter and a comrade simultaneously.'''' All his old comrades are very happy that ''VS'' is going to occupy the Chief Ministerial chair, even though it is at the grand old age of 82. ''''This is the first time that some one from a proletarian background is coming to power. He knows the sufferings of the working class. So the people have high expectations from him,'''' said another comrade A K Paraman.

''VS'' was born on October 20, 1923, as the second son of Venthalathara Sankaran, who ran a small textile shop, and Karthyayani in Punnapra village of Alappuzha district. Smallpox claimed his mother''s life when ''VS'' was only four years'' old. He lost his father also when he was eleven.

Criticism

During the CPM state conference held in Kottayam, he has been criticized strongly due to his style of functioning by a majority of Pinarayi Vijayan supporters known as official faction and they demanded his ouster from Chief Minister. They warned that the party would lose seats if it goes for ahead parliamentary elections under his leadership.

Achuthanandan was heavily criticized for his allegedly highly insensitive and deplorable comments regards the family of late NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was slain while defending the Mumbai city against the terror attacks. Allegedly agitated by Achuthanandan's neglect to timely offer condolences despite even Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa having done same, as well as perceived insult and insensitivity in sending sniffer dogs by CM's security to a house in mourning, when faced with criticism CM finally wished to visit, Sandeep's father requested the minister to not to visit. When Achuthanandan nevertheless still entered the house, he was humiliated and evicted by the father on live TV.

Smarting under the snub, Achuthanandan stated during a TV interview that "Is there any rule that both the Karnataka Chief Minister and Kerala Chief Minister should go together to his (Sandeep's) home? If not for Sandeep's house, not even a dog would have gone there."

Faced by heavy public criticism and furore over this again, Achuthanandan finally offered a public apology, which was accepted by Sandeep's father, finally bringing an end to the controversy.

Controversies

During the 2006 Assembly Elections, the party had to revert its decision of not to field Achuthanandan as a candidate. This was in reaction to organised protest marches by Achuthanandan groups across the state. Many people believe that he had links with the planned demonstration against the party. However, an enquiry was conducted in this regard and some of his supporters were punished and the rest would escape.

The anti-reclamation stir launched by the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU) at Mankonpu in 1996-97, under the leadership of Achuthanandan created much controversy. The protest got the sobriquet following the violent methods and crop destruction resorted to by the KSKTU cadre. The stir generated lot of public criticism and Achuthanandan expressed his disapproval of any further destruction of crops. He was active in the famous Punnapra-Vayalar uprising that led to a police shoot-out with many casualties.

He initiated the Munnar eviction mission. Massive portions of land allegedly grabbed over the years by resort owners and multinational companies like Tata Tea Limited. Later, the demolition team landed in the city of Kochi, and other cities in Kerala and recovered huge parts of land and subsequently. Unfortunately, the mission had failed and even the team which led it was orphaned. The District Collector, Inspector General of Police and the Person in charge had been replaced. As the opponents’ claim, this may cause to have lost some credibility of the government. Meanwhile, Achuthanandan said that the Munnar mission would continue vigorously and extended to other areas

Being the chief minister of the state, he has to frequently face struggle with Pinarayi Vijayan, the powerful head of the party which leads the ruling coalition. Both of them are heading for showdowns, which often lacking Achuthanandan to take strong decisions. This power struggle often turned worse as both attacking each other. As a result, this group fights created two set of party leaders and even the ministers in the government, the name called VS groups and Pinarayi groups.

In a statement he called Faris Abubakhar, a businessman in Kerala as a ‘hated man’ as the latter’s alleged involvement with the kidney racket in Singapore. Later, during an interview with a TV channel, Farris Abubacker claimed that he bribed money to VS Achuthanandan also. Interview video This became controversy again and VS dismissed the whole allegations made by Farris as ‘fabricated’.

V.S Achuthanand's daughter V.V. Asha has landed herself in another controversy with the State Government deciding to grant Rs. 35 lakh granted under the Marine Biotechnology Research Programme of the Kerala Biotechnology Mission (KBC) which Chief Minister is the president. The money was granted to her for a research project but the decision to give the money to her drawn flak from several quarters as she has no prior expertise in the area of marine biotechnology.

Major achievements

Initiated action against encroachment on government land in the hill resort and tea plantation town of Munnar

On 30 December 2007, he became the first Communist CM to trail to the 800-year-old hill temple of Sabarimala. The 84-year-old Achuthanandan rejected any sort of physical or medical support as he worried doctors trying to catch up with him while trudging non-stop three hours on foot.

V S Achuthandan supports free and open source software movement in the state and Richard Stallman has also supported his activities regarding this.

The central committee has approved the Politburo's decision to suspend them. Later the central committee revoked the suspension of VS

Political life

He entered politics through trade union activities and joined State Congress in 1938. In 1940, he became a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). During his 40 years as a politician he was imprisoned for five years and six months and was in hiding for four and half years. He was a state secretariat member of the CPI in 1957. During the Sino-Indian war in 1962, he was with the nationalists in the party, supporting Indian side. He was demoted in the party rank when he participated in a blood donation camp to help Indian soldiers. He is the only living Keralite among the 32 members who left the CPI National Council in 1964 to form the CPI(M). He is the senior most leader of CPI(M) in Kerala.

Early life

Born on 20 October 1923 to Sankaran and Accamma in Alappuzha district of Kerala state, Achuthanandan had to face poverty from a very early age. He lost his mother when he was four years old and subsequently lost his father at age 11. This forced him to quit his studies after finishing 7th standard in school. He started working by helping his elder brother in a village tailoring shop. Later he took up the job of meshing coir to make ropes at a coir factory.
